High performance polymer materials

High-performance polymer materials have increasingly become more important due to the widening and sometimes contradicting technical requirements as the physical, chemical, electrical and thermal properties continue to increase. These new materials help to achieve the goal of sustainable use of resources, improving energy efficiency and ensuring environmental compatibility.

INDOMET provides high-performance polymer materials to companies in the commercial sector based on:

  • Phenyl Methyl Siloxane (PMPS)
  • Fluoro Siloxane
  • Fluoropolymers (PTFE, PFPE)

Phenyl Methyl Siloxane (PMPS)

Polymeric siloxanes consist of repeating Si-O units. In the case of the phenyl-methyl polymer siloxanes, organic groups (phenyl, methyl) are bound to the siloxane units (Si-O).

Based on the higher binding force of the atoms in the siloxane chain (Si-O-Si-O- ...) compared to the binding force in an organic polymer (carbon chains), our materials result in unique physical, chemical and electrical traits.

The chemical structure of the siloxanes allows it to be manufactured in a variety of forms. These forms can come as a liquid, gel, elastomer (rubber) and resin (solid). This is made possible by its extraordinary properties of allowing many combinations of Si-O structure variations and its organic buildup.

Phenyl-methyl-siloxanes have a particularly good chemical stability and are available for applications with an operating temperature between -20°C and 245°C.

Phenyl-methyl-siloxanes are most typically seen used as lubricants, transformer oils, release agents, hydraulic fluid, antifoam agents and as diffusion pump oils.

Fluoro Siloxane

Fluorine-modified siloxanes become products that are very resistant to hydrocarbons, esters and oxidation. They can also be used in a wide temperature range (-60°C to 290°C). Fluoro silicones do not have methyl groups on their siloxane chains, but fluoro-alkyd groups. This makes them even more temperature and oxidation resistant than all other siloxanes (PMPS). They are produced in the form of oils, fats and pastes. Fluore-siloxanes are used, among other things, as lubricants for extreme temperatures, defoamers, compressor and hydraulic oils.

Polymethyltrifluoropropyl silicones in particular have gained technical importance as fluoro silicone rubbers (short name MFQ or FMQ). With exceptionally high resistance to fuels, oils and other chemicals, they are exceptional when leveraged as starting products for vulcanizates.

Fluoropolymers (PTFE, PFPE)

Fluoropolymers include fully and partially fluorinated plastics such as PTFE and PFPE. These are high-performance plastics which, due to their high fluorine content, have particularly good chemical resistance to other chemical elements. Most of the practical properties of fluoropolymers are due to the fluorine atoms attaching to the carbon chain.

Fluoropolymers have many unique properties. They can be used in the temperature range from -200°C to 260°C. They have excellent electrical insulating properties and are also very hydrophobic. Their chemical resistance is the reason for their physiological harmlessness.

Their most common applications are protective layers against heat, mechanical abrasion, electricity and chemicals.
